I'll give you hints, and I'll give you three..." Zork Nemesis -------------------------------------------------- Table Of Contents: A. How to use this guide B. History C. A few words about the game D. The Guide itself E. Bugs! F. Final e-mail messages G. Credits H. Contact info -------------------------------------------------- A. How to use this guide First of all, don't use this guide from the beginning to the end. You'll spoil the game, and spoil it bad. This guide is to be used only if you get stuck on a puzzle. Also note, that I will give small hints before I give the final solution to a puzzle, so you may still solve it on your own. Now, this is VERY IMPORTANT: TURN WORD WRAP OFF!!! If you don't do this, the guide will look terrible and you'll get all the hints to a puzzle at once (including the final solution). So, if you don't want to spoil the fun, turn Word Wrap off. Every puzzle in the game has a name. So, if you get stuck, remember the name, and use "Search" in Notepad (or whatever program you are using to view this) and search for that name. This will get you directly to the proper place. -------------------------------------------------- B. History 19.X.2003 21:54 (local time) - I'm starting to write this guide. 20.X.2003 18:08 (local time) - I FINISHED MY FIRST FAQ EVER :) Verion 1 is ready. 20.X.2003 19:24 - Minor corrections done. Ver 1.0.1 21.X.2003 14:00 - Minor changes. Ver 1.0.2 (yeah, I like changing this number :P ) 12.XI.2003 14:30 - Added the final e-mail messages. Ver. 1.0.3 -------------------------------------------------- C. A few words about the game First expression that springs to mind is: original. I have not seen a game so original as "In Memoriam". The game is supposed to be made by a serial killer, who has just kidnapped another person. Your job is to solve all the puzzles he has made in hope of learning the whereabouts of the kidnapped person: Jack Lorski. The puzzles are very original, and to solve them you're going to have to use the Internet, because some information have been hidden on various sites (some real, some fake). You will even receive e-mails from other people who are trying to solve the case. The games graphics aren't anything outstanding: they are good, and that's final. But one thing should be said about them: they fit the plot. After all, the game was made by a killer, so you should expect a bit of psychedelic sounds and images. In the end, it turns out to be one hell of a ride. Not to mention, the killer calls you "my Little Friend" :) "In Memoriam" is not perfect. It's replay value is rather low. Once you solve the case, there is nothing more to do. Solving the mystery of the serial killer can take quite some time though, so it isn't that bad. Also, the "login" system could be a bit better (you need an account to play, and managing accounts is VERY, and I mean !VERY! limited). You can't change the password, and if for some reason you'd loose it and the game files, you would not be able to start an account with the same e-mail address. Bummer. In the end "In Memoriam" is a good game, which will make your brain cells work quite often... WARNING: can cause headaches! :) Overall: 8,5/10 -------------------------------------------------- B. The Guide. The first 4 puzzles don't have a name, so I'll just "describe" them. Or at least I'll try :) Part 0: Introduction Before the puzzles start, you'll get some animations and a message from the killer... Just follow you instincts, and you'll pass that. The knife: A knife, a hand... ---> Don't worry, he's not going to kill you... ---> Put the knife in the hand. That was simple, was it? Part 1: Test of The Initiate Sun: Use the blade. ---> Make sure, you get the WHOLE picture. ---> The address is in the lower right part of the screen ---> The password is ANIMA (it's near the right edge) Moon: Follow the Sun. ---> The Phoenix will draw you a Sun. ---> Click on the sun. The page will give you the password. ---> The password is SPIRITUS The letters will follow your mouse cursor. Block/Earth: Enter the password... ---> There's not much I can say. Just enter the password. ---> Press (on your keyboard): P H E N I X Congratulations. You are now an Initiate. Time for some harder puzzles. Part 2: AQUA The puzzles here are divided into two sections, but I'll treat them as one... A small note: You propably noticed that you now have access to a menu (the white square on the left). Through this menu you will have access to all of Jacks films as well as access to your web browser and e-mail program. APHEBIS: Put the film in right order (like you didn't knew that already :P) ---> Check your e-mail. ---> Get the Super8 movie analyzer. Watch the film carefully. ---> I can't give a solution to this one. Just watch the film and recreate it. BUG ALERT: I found that sometimes the movie would not stop at the end and simply continue playing from the beginning, thus preventing you from completing the puzzle. Just click on the button and start to play the movie again. If it still goes bad, exit and reenter the puzzle. TETIMA: Tetimas first part is very easy. Just click on the blue circle. Don't click too fast, or you'll start from the beginning. The photos might help, but something else is needed first. ---> The analyzer will be useful here. ---> Does EPICHARMOU mean anything to you? ---> Search for that on the Internet. ---> Look here for the solution: http://www.rhodestravel.com/en/Daten.html SOAPPHI: Look carefully. ---> Don't look at Karen. There's something more important. ---> In the background is the position you need. ---> The position is 19/75 The answer to the second part is on the Internet. ---> The answer is on Karens site. Can you find it? ---> Look in the gallery. ---> The password is SANNE BOS: Part one is simple. Just move your mouse over every square. The counter in the corner tells you how many squares are left. Do you know who Volker is? ---> Or Wichman? Do you know anything about him? ---> Search the Internet for a few of the given names. ---> 1. Berthold, 2. Babureck, 3. Volker, 4. Reinhart, 5. Wagner 6. Wichman SYRO: Not much I can say here. Lead the target to the destination. If you're running ---> If you're not good at it, look for the password -> ---> -> -> ---> Vassili Tsirkas out of time, wait in one of the circle "safe zones". USTICHOS: Not much to say here as well... just click on the small polyp-like things. ---> Again, if you're nor good at it, look for the name -> ---> -> -> ---> Solingen Watch for predators, which will eat your little creatures. Clicking on the predators will kill them. CHNOUPH: Use the ink to fill the gap. Next part is very simple. Just form SOLINVICTUS by catching letters (and avoiding traps) and your done. SOTHIR: Just do what he tells you to do. Group the lights. NOTE: I noticed some people have quite a problem in getting past this point. Sometimes the game won't continue even if the lights are on top of each other. If this happens, you need to: a) try to break the group of lights and then regroup them, or b) exit and reenter the puzzle. What are levhas? ---> Find a site about Sain Sophia. ---> The photos will guide you. ---> OK, number the levhas from left to right with numbers from 1 to 8. Now number the places where you need to put the levhas by using columns and rows, so the top left place is 1x1 and the bottom right is 4x2. Here's the answer: 1- 4x2; 2- 2x2; 3- 1x2; 4- 2x1; 5- 1x1; 6- 3x1; 7- 4x1; 8- 3x2 OUPHISIT: Search the Internet for those names. ---> Istanbul. -> ---> You need to find a book seller in Istanbul. There's one on ---> Search for Kasim Sari -> ---> The answer is LUND 185053 the list with the other names, but that's not good enough. Well done, AQUA is defeated. TERRA awaits. Part 3: TERRA EPITECH: Position the dial... The closer you'll get, the more "lights" will be red. Put the photos together. This will reveal clues. ---> Whitford. -> ---> Helena. ---> Search for that and you'll get the info you need. ---> Helena Whitford. Born 07.09.1981 Don't forget to press enter when you're done! EPICHNAUS: Try feeding the spider (or whatever that is). ---> Each sun will move him either 1, 2 or 3 steps ahead. Can't tell you anything more about this one... sorry. TAIR: There's a clue on the ground. Part of it is covered, but that doesn't matter. ---> What do all those places have in common? ---> All the colleges are from Oxford. Find Oxfords map coordinates. ---> 051N44 001W15 ARON: The blade will reveal the 5 letters. Avoid the stars. ---> OESPG ---> Search for that and you'll find the answer. The moving photo will ---> Malard also help you. BROUS: There are 4 (not 3) items on the screen! Check your e-mails. ---> Below the box is an envelope. ---> Search for Maggioli murder ---> Gianni ATHOUR: Just solve the puzzle... Nothing more to say. Just remember to change the size of the pieces. RHOMENOS: Just use your memory and you'll quickly get through that one. Jos' Cortado ---> No, he's not a painter. ---> Remember what you are searching for. You need the words on the engraving. ---> Search for Cortado engraving ---> MANUS DOMINI SOON: This is a silly puzzle. Mini golf at it's best/worst? No clues. AMPHATAB: First photo will set you on track, a second photo will make you sure. ---> Joos Amman Von Ravensburg ---> 658... Now, all you need to do is enter it. Use combos. Avoid the red pill. 2 green pills, one after the other will put "her" to sleep, 2 yellow pills one after the other are lethal. Once "she" is on a treadmill, click to scare "her" Bravo again. TERRA is defeated, and AER lies in wait. away when the desired number is reached. Part 4: AER ISY: How good were you at chemistry at school? ---> 7? That's strange... Does it have anything to do with ---> http://www.hermeticum.info/laboratory.html ---> Latin name for mercury is... ---> HYDRARGYRUM alchemy perhaps? Thx to talax for this one. CHNOUM: Write on the sky... ---> The words are: est impuri separatio a substantia puriore ---> The missing word is Alchimia But one word is missing... SOSOMMO: First part is simple. Put the "ball" in the "hole". Check your e-mails. ---> What happens when you can't find something on the Internet? ---> There is no "space" for error (when searching the Internet don't use ---> Search for InkDesign77 ---> Lucciola Bella the spacebar). VARI: Use your ears ---> Check your e-mails. The first part should be there. ---> Naples, Genova, Geneva, Toulouse, Oxford, Paris, Marburg, Wittenberg, Prague, Frankfurt, Venice, Rome |--|--|--|--|--|--| ZOCHA: | 6|32| 3|34|35| 1| A magic number: 111 ---> All rows and columns must add up to 111. ---> Start by "finishing" the rows or columns which are missing only one number. ---> | 7|11|27|28| 8|30| OR http://www.renaissanceastrology.com/chartweek3-18-02.html |19|14|16|15|23|24| Thx to talax for pointing this one out. After that, you need to play a small game. Get the box to it's destination. |18|20|22|21|17|13| I can't really give you any tips about it. Sorry. |25|29|10| 9|26|12| |36| 5|33| 4| 2|31| |--|--|--|--|--|--| SPUCHU: The entry speech is quite important. ---> The "everplaying" video clip is also useful. ---> Search for "bearded man lightning stick cithara" ---> Look here: http://www.demagia.net/bruno2.htm ---> Asclepius The site you'll find is quite useful BTW... PEPISOHT: That speech at the beginning has a purpose. ---> Agrippa ---> Talisman, astral images. ---> You'll find the images here: http://www.demagia.net/corne.html Note the changing sounds when you place a piece correctly. Sun is first, second is Venus, third is Jupiter. The second part is very hard, and can not be omitted. You need to "put" the proper letters (NOLAIN) in the correct places (corners). You'll most likely end up hitting the keyboard keys like crazy... Sorry, no other way :( Note: exiting and reentering the puzzle will change the position of the letters, so it might be a good idea to wait for a better configuration. Tip by veistran: "Good tip for the push the letters out puzzle is, be systematic about it, press one key at a time and don't let go of the key until after you've pressed the next one. This is because if you do let go prior to hitting the next one they start to fall in and you lose progress." PHU: Haven't you seen the symbols before? ---> Use the site found in SPUCHU. ---> 1548-1600 (Don't forget to press enter) Before you continue I suggest you learn how to operate the "dragon fly". Pressing a wing (or the tail) and then one of the antennas produces a letter. The left antennae will give you letters from A to M. The right: N to Z. He had to flee across Europe, starting in Naples. ---> The numbers you got before are important. ---> Search for 1548 1600 Naples ---> Giordano Bruno NEPHOEMES: Use your ears! ---> Use a piece of paper and a pencil if you have to. ---> It seems the buttons get remixed every time... Your on your own. But nothing beats ears. Just be careful in the second part... It's easy. No clues required. AER is gone, IGNIS awaits. Part 5: IGNIS PHATITI: Light the sun. ---> Putting the paper above the "sun" will reveal the missing ---> Remember your searching for a castle. ---> Search for Benatky castle 1599 ---> 1864 letters. CHNOUMOS: Join the sticks. ---> So, who found that supernova? ---> Search tycho cassiopeia 1572 ---> Here's the solution: http://www.seds.org/~spider/spider/Vars/Pics/tyc_sn.jpg IPI: Puzzle time. No clues. Destroy the planets by bouncing the beam at least 3 times. No clues. TEUCHMOS: Keep the fire burning. Simple as that. You won't find the street name and house number by looking at the rotating ---> Another brick in the wall... ---> KNUDSTORP 1546 ---> Novy Svet NR 1 photo... It's not that simple. CHTHISAR: Simple "labyrinth". Avoid the "holes". Where did you see the symbols before? ---> Again, look back at SPUCHU ---> NAGHA SUBOS: Let's burn! ---> The matchbook is a little different now. ---> Position the skeletons bones to be just like the ones on the matchbook. IN CASE OF BUG -> If the bug prevents you from finishing the puzzle, here's a nice hint: The sounds of the bones will help you. Each time a bone is correctly placed, you'll hear a sound. So grab a bone BUG ALERT: If you leave the puzzle, you will not see the skeleton on the and start turning in slowly, and when you hear that sound, stop. Do this this matchbook once you return. with all the bones and you're set. Simple reflex game. Kill the parasites. No clues. WARNING: Once you get the movie about Benatky castle, make a screenshot when the second part of the message is being shown. You'll need it! (Just press Print Screen at the right moment, and paste it into Paint). LACHORI: Pacman? No clues. The photos look a bit strange. ---> Put all the photos (except one) over the light, to ---> Mocenigo. ---> Search for mocenigo family ---> Here's the answer: http://www.hotel-mocenigo.com/ reveal the name. The last one has the missing letter! BUG ALERT: It seems there's a bug. Use a "bird" with three "tails", not two. BUG FIXED: It seems the developers fixed this one, the page shows the correct image now. SICHET: You must make the film play at the right speed. Moving the mouse up/down will change the size of the images (this isn't that important), while moving the mouse left/right will change the speed of the images. The images should move from right to left (so move your mouse right). Can't say anything more. Space Invaders 2.0? :P A bit frustrating but simple. Use the spacebar to shoot. <- Thx goes to veistran for pointing this out. CHOUTARET: Have you made a screenshot when I told you? I hope you did. ---> Check your e-mails... ---> The full message written in blood... decrypt that. ---> NAGHAMMADI ---> The full name is: Mohammed Ali Samman If you didn't, you can always watch the film with the second part of the message one more time via the game menu. Part 6: Finale I won't say a thing. I leave the finale to you. Good luck :) -------------------------------------------------- E. Bugs! I've pointed out bugs as they came along, but here's a complete list. Some have yet not been mentioned. I hope I don't have to write POSSIBLE SPOILERS!, or do I? :P - APHEBIS: I found that sometimes the movie would not stop at the end and simply continue playing from the beginning, thus preventing you from completing the puzzle. Just click on the button and start to play the movie again. If it still goes bad, exit and reenter the puzzle. - SUBOS: If you leave the puzzle, you will not see the skeleton on the matchbook once you return. - LACHORI: It seems there's a bug. Use a "bird" with "three" tails, not two. BUG FIXED: It seems the developers fixed this one, the page shows the correct image now. - If you ever loose your password AND the game files, you can't use the e-mail address you used before. If you loose the password, you can still get it. Open the following file: \In Memoriam\Media\Dir\Save\User_X\user.cfg with a Notepad (where X is the user number... mostly 1). The password is just after the e-mail address. - General bug: sometimes the puzzles can "break" and you won't be able to finish them. Just exit a puzzle and come back to reset it. -By HOWEG (GameFAQs): After installing [the game], ExtremeHU and GBA Renamer stopped working (a few people know what this app does). (I hope HOWEG doesn't mind me putting this) -------------------------------------------------- F. Final e-mail messages. After you beat the game you'll recieve some e-mail messages from various people. Since it can take up to a couple of days, I decided to post them here, if you don't want to wait that long (deleting the In Memoriam account will stop the messages from coming in!). I hope I don't have to warn about spoilers. Julie_massenet@fsmail.net wrote: The Phoenix almost caught us out, but WE WON! What a team, eh? Have you managed to get hold of the agency? Take care, Julie Hello, Jack and Karen have been rescued. After being held inside an abandoned factory in a suburb of Milan, Italy, they were freed by police forces. They are in good shape and are resting up before being questioned by investigators. The Phoenix was not apprehended on the premises and, according to police, foresaw this outcome and escaped before the assault began. We thank you all for your participation, and wish to congratulate in particular the three participants who succeeded, through their intelligence and cool-headedness, in foiling this killer's plans. Kind regards, SKL Network. Hello, Jack and Karen are safe and sound. We are all relieved at the outcome, which I must admit was not what I had expected. I managed to have a few words with them after they were freed. They have suffered and they will be mentally scarred by their long captivity. Having said that, they will make a full recovery in time. They gave me some information, which must remain confidential due to the ongoing investigation, but it confirms my convictions about the Phoenix's modus operandi. Fortunately, although striving for an irrational, lunatic goal, the Phoenix nevertheless followed a logic pattern: Jack and Karen were not members of Manus Domini, so the Phoenix did not have any reason to kill them. He was faithful to his logic right to the end. It is also possible that he looked on Karen as a sort of sister figure, given that she is also a victim of Manus Domini's criminal dealings. He therefore used them to share his conviction with us that there is a terrible plot against the truth - a sort of manipulation or censure at the highest levels against the broadcasting of certain details with the potential of challenging specific institutions, especially religious ones. Tomorrow, the police will publish a photo-fit of the killer, but there is every chance that the king of metamorphosis has already changed appearance as we speak. Don't change a thing - stay as you are, David Marcus Hello, We heard from the SKL agency about the decisive role you played in setting us free. We would personally like to thank you for your help, which proved to be so precious. The Phoenix is in a class of his own - over the last few months, we've managed to see just how Machiavellian his intelligence is. The last few weeks have been particularly hard, as we've been locked up in the dark. Right up to the end, we thought the Phoenix would kill us as well. Looking back on it, we realise just how much he needed to keep us alive to achieve what he called his 'Work', but during our captivity, we always had the impression that our lives were hanging by a thread. We are going to try to return to normality and would like to thank you again for everything that you have done for us. Kind regards, Jack Lorski and Karen Gijman Phoenix: Everything was planned right from the beginning. Everything. Except for Jack's stubbornness. His dogged determination to following my trail initially drove me to distraction. But I didn't take long to realise that he and his girlfriend could help to achieve the Work, or at least play a part in making people aware of it. Because those two were not Chosen Ones. Everything was planned. Everything. I knew one day or another that someone would manage to decrypt the Work. If not you, it would have been someone else. I knew that they'd come and set them free one day or another. They came, but they didn't find me. When they went there to free them, I was already long gone. Far away. They won't find me. Ever. His Work achieved, the Phoenix spread his wings and flew towards to the sun. The black, invincible sun.
